Dong Zhongshu’s invocation and commentary on “Theory”

Abstract:Dong Zhongshu attaches great importance to the Confucian classic “The Book of Confucianism” and uses it in large quantities in his works. Among them, “Three Strategies of Heaven and Man” is used 17 times, and “Age and Breeding” is used 43 times, and the frequency of the application is far higher than other works in the early Han Dynasty. In terms of methods of application, direct use is mostly used, and a few are connected. These citations have major value for the discussion of the Han Dynasty’s “Theory” version and the current version of “Theory”. Dong Zhongshu’s comments on “Theory” wrapped the cat up: “Give it to me.” While finding rationales for his political philosophy, he also influenced later “Theory” annotators, and was the main ideological origin of the ancients’ study of the history of “Theory” in Han Dynasty.

“Theory” is one of the main Confucian classics. As early as the reign of Emperor Wen of Xihan, he had all appointed doctoral students together with “Filial Piety”, “Mencius” and “Lya”. As a Confucian scholar, Dong Zhongshu led the “Ming Kong family” and attached great importance to “Theory” and used it in large quantities in his works. The “Three Strategies of Heaven and Man” written in “Han Shu·Dong Zhongshu” refers to 17 articles of “Theory”, while the three classics of “The Book”, “The Book” and “The Book” are combined with only 7 articles [1]. According to the statistics of the author, “The Years and the Dew of the Years” quoted “The Discussion” 43 times, and has been exposed to 19 articles in the current version of “The Discussion”. In the early days of Confucianism, when Confucianism had not yet become a clear study, and the “Speech” had not yet entered the “Speech”, the scholars used the “Speech” to “Speech”The frequency of “The Voice” is not high, so Dong Zhongshu’s high frequency use of “The Voice” is particularly eye-catching.

Therefore, this article will start with a comprehensive collection of Dong Zhongshu’s use of “Theory”, and analyze his related issues in terms of invocation and discussion on this topic, in order to accurately evaluate Dong Zhongshu’s contribution to “Theory” discussion and his position in the history of “Theory”.

 

1. Dong Zhongshu’s important works are “Age of the Years” and the “Long-term cultivation of the three strategies of heaven and man” retained in the Han Book. The author has conducted a statistical analysis on the situation of invoking “Theory” in these two works. For the sake of convenience, the list is as follows. 2. Analysis of the situation of invocation

 

(I) Frequency invocation

 

The situation of Dong Zhongshu’s use of “Theory” in his works has been as follows. So what is the situation of “Theory” being used in other major works in the early Han Dynasty? Here we only compare the research and discussion targets of Lu Ja’s “New Word”, Ja’s “New Book”, and Liu An’s “Huainanzi”.

 

The New Language of Emperor Gaozu of Han used “The New Language” five times, and the following are:

During the reign of Emperor Hanwen, he used “The Book of Songs” twice, and was different from As follows:

 

1) “New Book·Rong”: “Quality and freedom of literature, history of literature, good literary quality, and then correct people.” [3] (quoted from “Yongye”)

 

2) “Han Book·Ji Zhi”: “Confucius said: If you hear the truth, I will treat people, and it must be the same Don’t worry! ”[4]1729 (quoted from “Yanjing”)

 

The situation in which Liu An’s “Huainanzi” during the reign of Emperor Wu of Han used “The Book of Songs”. Some scholars believe that although there are many quotes in the book “Confucius said”, Confucius’ words can only be found in “The Book of Songs” [5]. Some scholars have also made a conclusion on the citation of “Huainanzi” and its annotations and their notes. They found that there are more than 50 examples of “Theory”, but only more than 10 places can be used to find the basis for citing Confucius [6].

 

By comparing the situation of “Theory” mainly discussed with Hanchu, it can be seen that Dong Zhongshu is more concerned than othersConfucius’ words.

 

(II) Methods of application

 

Dong Zhongshu mostly uses direct application methods for the use of “Theory”. 30 of the direct invocations appear with the sentiment of “Confucius” and 3 mention the title of “Theory” and its brief title of “Theory”. Among the large number of direct invocations, there are both whole chapters and sentences.

 

The whole chapter uses, such as the “virtue is not lonely, there must be a confrontation” in “Three Strategies of Heaven and Man” [4] 1902, which means using “Li Ren” Chapter 25; “Man can promote the Tao, but not the Tao can promote peopleBaobao.com.” [7] 168, which means using “The Spirit of the Spirit” Chapter 29.
